I was shopping on South Seneca in Wichita, Kansas and from a distance spotted this restaurant called El Mexico Cafe. I’d heard many reviews. Some good. Some bad. I decided to take a breather and check it out.
I ordered the Steak con Chili, which came with hamburger steak with chili verde on top (which includes pork) along with rice and ranchero beans. Of course, I was also served with complimentary chips and salsa.
As to the chips and salsa. Chips were fine. But ordinary. Nobody would scream “OMG! These chips rock!” I thought that the mild salsa was terrible. It seriously was so thick and tasted like ketchup. The hot salsa was acceptable. Not amazing, but did the job.
The Steak con Chili? I thought it was average or okay. It wasn’t anything that wowed me. The pork had a bit too much fat in it for my liking. And I didn’t think the ranchero beans had much, if any, flavor. The chili itself had decent flavor, but they needed more sauce in my opinion.
With that said I ate most or all of the entree (not all the tortillas), so I’m not saying it was horrible. I’m just saying my visit was “okay.”
