It’s been several years since I made it to Old School Tap House & Social in Kechi, Kansas. I’d heard that there is a Mexican spot that sells tacos, tortas, quesadillas and burritos in the same parking lot as Old School. So I decided to go.

I went ahead and ordered Skydance Brewing Co. IPA called Fancy Dance. By the way, Skydance is Native American owned and based out of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

I put my order in at “Mario’s Mexican Food.” I used quotation marks because I’m not sure if the place even has a name. I didn’t see one. But it is owned by a guy named Mario so I’m just going to start the trend of calling it “Mario’s.” Anyway, Mario told me that he moved from Chicago around a year ago and lives in Benton. He previously worked in the restaurant industry in Chicago including Mexican and Greek restaurants.

I ordered “The Special #1” for $20.80. It included three tacos, a quesadilla and a burrito with salsa and sauce. For the tacos I went with Al Pastor, for the burrito I went with Ground Beef and for the Quesadilla I went with Chicken. I thought the tacos were above average and the burrito was average. The Quesadilla was universally loved at my table with folks saying things like “that’s an excellent quesadilla.” I also ordered some chips and queso and everybody at my table including myself thought the queso was excellent. Finally I tried the elote and it was probably average.

I really like the venue of Old School. And for those of you that don’t know — Old School is in a building that once was a small school. Just an old school Old School, I guess you could say. I saw some literature about renting the back room out for private parties. I could totally see doing that. It’s pretty neat.
