For more than 8-months I’ve been wanting to visit Pizaacos in Hutchinson, Kansas. Actually, that is how long I have been REALLY wanting to go. I wanted to go before that.
The owner of PiZaccos is the granddaughter of a dude named Charlie Hoffman. Charlie was from Pratt, Kansas and opened “Charlie’s Home of Pizza Taco” in Pratt in 1965 and operated for around 10-years in the spot that is now The Chapeau. Charlie’s was home of the Pizza Taco. When Charlie shut down in the 1970s, The Chapeau took over the building and carried on the Pizza Taco, though it was and is a different recipe. I have blogged about The Chapeau before, so I speak from first-hand experience.
After being out of the restaurant business for around 10-years, Charlie re-opened in Pratt in 1985 and he kept “Charlie’s Home of Pizza Taco” going until his passing in 2014 — around 40-years in total.
Folks in Wichita, Kansas may have experienced the “Charlie’s Pizza Taco” that was opened by Charlie’s son, David Hoffman, in west Wichita. It operated from 2011 to 2017 when David shut it down.
Enter the current day. Charlie’s granddaughter, Dani Collins, opened PiZaaco’s in Hutchinson in 2012 at 112 S. Main St. It is going strong to this day and they just celebrated their 12-year anniversary. She uses her grandpa’s original recipe for the PiZaaco. I was fortunate that I was able to meet her, though she had no idea who I was (I think…but heck if I know…I didn’t say anything). I really enjoyed getting the history of the Pizza Taco straight from her because frankly I’d heard multiple incorrect stories. This is the true story.
As for the food, I ordered the Original PiZaaco and added pepperoni based on the recommendation of the dude that took my order. I also ordered The Pizza Pup, which was a hotdog wrapped in a pizza crust.
I loved my PiZaaco and loved my Pizza Pup. You got to try a PiZaaco at least once. And so much interesting history. You should know that PiZaacos has limited hours — open Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Check their page. They also have take and bake options.
