Omurice is a Japanese dish. “Omu” is the Japanese pronunciation of “omelette” and “rice” is, well, rice. So, “rice omelette.” My research, which is not thorough, shows that this dish probably originated in the city of Osaka, which is a western Japanese city.
I feel like I’ve had a lot of Japanese food in my life. And I’ve never had Omurice. But I’d been craving it for the last 1 1/2 months seeing all my other foodie friends check it out at Kyuramen x TBaar located at 314 N. Rock Rd. in Wichita,Kansas. That is on the east side of Rock Rd. just south of Central Ave. right by the Fuzzy’s Taco Shop.
I LOVED the Omurice. I will definitely go back and get it again and in fact I don’t know that I will be able to NOT get it. But I love eggs — I eat an egg or two for breakfast almost every morning. If you don’t like, or maybe even love eggs, this dish is not for you.
The Omurice at Kyuramen appears to me to be pretty authentic to what you’d get in Japan. I could be wrong, but online research says I’m right. Demi glacé sauce is what you see in the photos, but it wasn’t sweet at all. Definitely savory and my server was right to describe it as more of a “gravy.”
I took a bunch of photos to show you the process of the Omurice being cut open by the server and then the gravy poured over the omu on top of the rice because I just really loved it.
If you haven’t tried this dish, and you are an egg fan like TKG, definitely put this on your list. You’ll be glad you did. And if you’re not, well I got nothing for you.
