Belpre, Kansas has a population of 97 residents according to the 2020 U.S. Census.
It’s also home to a restaurant called Tapia’s Mexican Restaurant where I recently stopped by. The restaurant has been running for approximately eleven years and the owner, according to my sources, used to own a restaurant, and perhaps a food truck, in Larned, Kansas.
When I visited I ordered the “Tony’s Tacos,” which comes with your choice of meats along with melted cheese, grilled onions, fresh onions, cilantro, avocado and lime on a lightly fried shell. I went with the barbacoa and adobada for my proteins, as both are made “in- house.” I really enjoyed both and adding the in-house made salsa made the tacos even better.
By the way, if you go, Tony’s Tacos are not currently on the menu. But Tony is married to the owner and that’s the genesis of the dish. I was told new menus are being released, which will include Tony’s Tacos.
Im not sure how much some of you appreciate how important it is that spots like Tapia’s exist — but it really does. Without “the” restaurant in town, things can get pretty dire. So kudos to the restaurant and Belpre.
