I recently posted a video of The Historic Wolf Hotel and Events Center in Ellinwood Kansas. If some of you didn’t see it — go to my page and check it out.
First off, thank you to Amanda for the hospitality. She was disappointed I couldn’t stick around longer, as was I, but glad she could give me a few highlights.
The Wolf Hotel was built in 1894 by John Wolf and sits atop a tunnel system (spanning two blocks). The tunnel system goes under the streets underneath other Main Street stores in addition to the hotel.
Okay, this is gonna be tough to explain, but let me give it the ol’ college try. Back in the late 19th century (that’s late 1800s for some of you folks…) Ellinwood, and turns out some other cities in Kansas, built these tunnels basically to make sure the cowboys that stopped in town had somewhere to go about their business, other than the “nice shops” on the Main Street. So, the cowboys would park/tie their horses down on the street and then go down to the tunnels where there were saloons, clothing shops, blacksmiths and of course…ladies of the night.
Today, you can go on a tour of the tunnels and on Friday and Saturday nights you can actually eat and drink in one of the saloons in the tunnel. They even have live music sometimes! How neat?!?!
For your paranormal activity peeps out there…you might already know this. But there’s a particular room in the tunnels that ghost hunters go to that purportedly has a lot of paranormal activity. The hotel is also supposed to be haunted. I didn’t see any ghosts…but I did talk with this one psychologist that no one else could see and he kept telling me that he needed to rescue his wife from a tall building since it was Christmas.
By the way, did you know there are five rooms that you can currently stay in? Course you didn’t. Now you do.
I know I’m missing a lot of history — some I don’t know and some I forgot. But this place is most definitely worth checking out. The hotel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places – NPS in 2002.

P.S. Check out some of the photos to get a feel for the hotel and the tunnels. And if you want a better view of the hotel rooms, check out my video that I made on my page. I posted it a few days ago.
