Mr. Burger was opened in Great Bend, Kansas in the 1970s. At one time there were Mr. Burgers in Dodge City, Kansas, Hoisington, Kansas and other locations. Based on my limited (but definitely attempted) research, it appears to me that Mr. Burger was originally a franchised chain based somewhere out of the south. During some period of time Danny Schwartz was manager for several of the Kansas stores until in 1999 he bought this store in Great Bend.
To this day, Mr. Schwartz’s wife, Sandy and his family continue to own and/or operate Mr. Burger.
When I stopped by Mr. Burger I wasn’t that pumped and I certainly had not thought about the history. But once I devoured my burger (it was REALLY good) I wanted to learn more. I couldn’t find much online and so after several attempts I was able to get ahold of Mr. and Mrs. Schwartz’s son, who manages the store. He told me some of the story I am reporting. Additionally, he tells me that three times per week they get a shipment of fresh beef from Ellinwood Packing Plant, Inc., the onion rings are handmade everyday and the French fries are made from real potatoes they cut themselves and then fry.
Come on. This ain’t a game. On my trip I got the Bacon Cheeseburger and fries. I know the burger looks basic. I figured I’d eat half (tee’ing up Emily for a good joke), but couldn’t put the burger down.
I really enjoyed my visit to Mr. Burger and encourage you to check it out the next time you find yourself in the Great Bend area. It’s located (don’t you DARE ask me where it is…you know I’m talking to you) at 1100 Tenth St., Great Bend, KS 67530.
