As most people know Da Cajun Shak closed not too long ago. And LA-Cajun Seafood & Chicken in Wichita at 21st & Woodlawn opened up in its spot at the end of April.
I joined Fert The Foodie and Wichita By E.B. for a lunch. I don’t speak for them (never do) and specifically don’t as it relates to this visit as they have each already posted about their own experiences. SO THIS IS MY TAKE.
I do want to thank them both for letting me use their intellectual property, i.e. allow me to use their photos of the Gator Balls as I’m an idiot and didn’t take a photo.
We ordered up the (1) Fried Catfish with Collard Greens, (2) Bowl of Gumbo; (3) Bowl of Etouffee; (4) Bowl of Shrimp Chow Mein; and (5) Gator Balls and Shrimp.
There was one item I was a fan of, which were the Gator Balls. I just really liked them. Ironic that it’s the one dish I didn’t get a photo of. Again I speak only for me. But I’d order it again if I went.
There was one item that I liked mostly. The gumbo. It had a nice flavor, but it was one of the greasiest gumbos I’ve seen. So, did I like it? Yes. But did I like that much grease? No.
Generally speaking I didn’t like the rest. The catfish had no flavor unless doused in hot sauce. The collard greens (and I love a good collard greens) were not edible in my opinion. It was soggy like it had been sitting. The chow mein was so incredibly dry. And the Etouffee had the weirdest taste of any Etouffee I’ve had. And I loved the Etouffee that Da Cajun Shak used to have…before it closed.
If I went back I know I’d order the gator balls again. And I’d probably order the gumbo too because I liked the flavor and maybe it was just that batch that had all the grease. And moreover the server was SUPER excellent. She was top tier. But I wouldn’t order the other items I suspect. But that’s me.
So yeah. These are TKG’s thoughts on his visit to LA-Cajun Seafood & Chicken.
