FREE MEAL DISCLOSURE

TKG’s beady black eyes were focused on his pocket watch. 7:10pm and Live Local was late yet again. They’d had plans to meet at Blue Hook Cajun Seafood & Bar in Wichita, Kansas at 7:00pm for weeks.

“Hey The Kansas Gastronomist. Do you want to order now or what? I mean clearly Live Local procrastinates punctuality.” Clarissa said as she gestured to Sidney (maybe I misspelled) to take TKG’s order. “He’s a Punctuality Procrastinater!!!”

“Gosh darn it, Clarissa. I know you’re the General Manager. But leave the title designations to me!” TKG shouted as he did a little jig. TKG had that weird tic that most people suffer from — when being confrontational, do a jig.

After additional time passed Live Local finally arrived and TKG pretended to be happy to see him. But deep down all he could think about was getting even with Live Local. He knew he would. And he knew that it would be sooner or later. Or perhaps much later. Or perhaps whatever is between sooner and later. The options were limitless.

RESTAURANT NOTES:

I was invited to eat at Blue Hook and all of it was “on the house.” That’s a fancy way of saying I didn’t pay for the food. I tell you that to be upfront. But as always, I tip and “then some” on what the tab would have been. Live Local and I got two appetizers — the Cajun Nachos and the Crab Cake. We also ordered a Family Combo boil. It had snow crab, shrimp, mussels, sausage, crawfish, eggs, corn and potatoes. We also got some ramen to add to it.

Regarding the Boil, I thought it was quite good. The sausage and the corn were average, but the rest was above average, including the sauces. Actually, Live Local raved about the sauce and despite my utter hatred for him, I do trust his knowledge about seafood and boils since he’s from Louisiana. As far as the appetizers are concerned, I really liked the Cajun Nachos, though it wasn’t particularly seafood(y). The Crab Cakes were alright, but not really for me.

I acknowledge that I might have been treated differently since it was known that I was at the restaurant. But I can only speak from my experience and say that Sidney was a fantastic server and the food was great.
