Many people ask me “Oh TKG what should I do this weekend? I want to eat great food, but don’t forget that I made the decision to have kids so I also need an activity.”
Here you go.
Tucked away in the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson, Kansas there’s a spot called CDK Ventures at Cosmosphere Cafe. At first glance, no big deal. A cafe in a museum…just like all the other museums. No.
Jack Kipp opened this spot in August 2022. Before Cosmosphere Cafe he slapped down the eats at Hutch Community College. This is a legit restaurant where the food is made fresh to order.
I went with the Pulled Pork Bowl because I heard (and since have verified) that Jack smokes all of his meats and also because it sounded unique. I actually saw Jack slapping (I am just liking that word right now) it down in the kitchen behind the register. The bowl had smoked pork, Mac and cheese, baked beans, queso and bacon bits. The bacon was real bacon shredded into tiny shards. Here’s the pro-tip if you order it. Mix that up into a beautiful mess and go to town.
Loved my trip to the Cosmosphere Cafe and the Cosmosphere.

P.S. The Cosmosphere is the only Smithsonian Affiliate in the state of Kansas. And there is exactly one Smithsonian affiliate in Kansas with an awesome cafe. In other words, there is nowhere in Kansas (hard stop) that you can go to that is affiliated with the Smithsonian and also has fresh smoked pulled pork.
