When it is rainy or cold or both, I love soup.
I’m a HUGE fan of Yokohama Ramen Izakaya and the new spot next door called GYOZA BAR – Modern Japanese Eatery in Wichita,Kansas at N. Woodlawn St. & E. Central Ave. Both are owned by a local dude named Jack Fukuda.
I was standing in the rain trying to decide whether I would go Yokohama for ramen or Gyoza for gyoza and udon soup. When I saw nobody in Gyoza Bar (other than some gal outside also taking pics…so annoying), I went there. I hate seeing an empty restaurant.
For my main, I went with the Spicy Black Garlic Tonkotsu Udon. It has poached egg, ginger, pork, garlic flakes, corn, black garlic oil, kamaboko, kakiage, wakame, inari age and green onions in this amazing broth with udon noodles. I ate almost all of it, which is telling because look at the size of that bowl. The broth is just damn good. I like how the ingredients come out and you just toss them in.
Also, I had to order some gyoza. Now, I think I differ from some folks, but I generally do not go for the deep fried gyoza. I prefer steamed or alternatively pan-fried. So, I went for the 5-piece pork gyoza, steamed, which is my go-to. It is always good.
