In Little Sweden, USA (a/k/a Lindsborg) there’s a real neat shop called Hemslojd, Inc where craftsman actually make and artists decorate and personalize Dala Horses.
I knew nothing about Dala Horses, or Dalahäst, until my visit. But the name and concept comes from a province in central Sweden called Dalarna. I guess back in the day, Vikings considered the horse to be “holy” and so it became a popular thing in Dalarna to carve horses for kids. Wanting to prevent just one more child from getting one of these horses, I purchased one and had it personalized with my name.
I thought this shop was very cool and worth checking out. And now, TKG gots him a Dala Horse.
