JJ Beard’s Pub & Pizza opened in Wichita, Kansas approximately 8-weeks ago and I had been intending on getting there for some time. I finally made recently.
When I went, my server/bartender was James. He freakin’ killed it. Above and beyond. Gave great recommendations. Checked on me often. Etc. etc. etc.
I really enjoyed the food as well. I had done my research beforehand, which is par for the course. I had planned to order the Irish Egg Rolls, and James confirmed that he was a big fan. The rolls were filled with corned beef, sauerkraut, swiss cheese and sauce. They were excellent. Maybe my favorite Irish Egg Rolls. Three reasons why. First, the breading was not overly extensive. I get tired of egg rolls (all egg rolls) with way too much dough and little filling. Second, I felt that there was a good amount of corned beef — probably “generous” would be a correct use of the word here. Third, the juices held in the egg roll really well and just made those bites so good.
I also ordered the Meatlover’s Pizza. It came with Pepperoni, Ham, Beef, Sausage and Bacon. I thought it was a good pizza — definitely above average. There was a spice on it and not sure what it was, but it only added to the taste. I guess you’d say the spice accentuated the flavor. But honestly, plenty of toppings, cheese and marinara. I was told by James that the sauce and dough is made in house.
I noticed a sticker on the wall. The sticker is of Pizza Shuttle. I asked someone, whom turned out to be the co-owner, about it and he told me that the other co-owner had managed a Pizza Shuttle for a number of years and that definitely intrigued me. Those KU alumni will remember Pizza Shuttle.
JJ Beard’s is located on the southeast corner of West St. & 13th St. on the west side of Wichita in the Wood Bridge Center development. Where Maggie’s used to be.
