“What do you think you’re doing here TKG?!?!?! We don’t take kindly to Gastronomers around these here parts!”
I was sitting in JT Cafe in Macksville, Kansas.
Her words hurt me like a dagger in the chest. I could barely muster a sentence. First, I’d been kicked out of Doug’s basement. And now this????
“Nah, I’m just kidding. You’re our hero!!” the owner exclaimed. “By the way, are you liking the Vicky’s Omelette? As I told you previously during our conversation, the dish is named after my mother who was asked to make an omelette once years and years ago, and she didn’t know how to do it and then this came out. It’s a regular favorite. Again, I already told you this but feel compelled to say it again.”
I just kept on eating. Bite by bite. They weren’t angry bites. They were grateful bites.
RESTAURANT NOTES: The owner has been cooking in or owning restaurants in Macksville since 1984 — nearly half my life. The “J” and “T” in the name are the intials of her grandchildren. Really enjoyed talking with her. She was incredibly kind and friendly.
