Well I finally made it to Layali out in Derby, Kansas (236 W. Greenway St.). I went with a couple of friends. This was the first time for all of us.
We all split two appetizers. Pictured here is the Hummus & Zaatar Chips and the Roasted Eggplant Ragout. I thought the hummus was some of the better hummus I’ve had. I think it surpasses several local Mediterranean restaurants in Wichita (they will remain unnamed). Regardless, I’d order it again. I thought the roasted eggplant was alright, but thought maybe a bit more yogurt would be better.
As far as the soup you see — I ordered the Layali Chicken & Rice. I REALLY liked it. It was unique. There was a sweet hint to each bite. We all thought it was from the carrots . Who knows. But in my mind it worked very well. And the chicken was plentiful and quite good. I could have had this as a meal (larger quantity of course). I also ordered the Beef Shawarma. Again, I would put this as above some (but not all) of the local Mediterranean restaurants in Wichita. In other words, I thought about SOME spots in Wichita and drew the conclusion that I preferred this shawarma.
Finally, one of my friends ordered the Steak & Confit Tomatoes Flatbread and I tried a slice. I thought this was VERY tasty. It would be something I’d definitely get again.
I was sad to see that were not a lot of diners at Layali when we were there. In fact for a while it was just us three. Later, another table or two arrived. It was a Saturday lunchtime so hopefully they are busier at dinner. You should go and show them some love if you haven’t.
