Gastrofans,
When I checked into my hotel in Sorrento, Italy (along the Amalfi Coast) I asked where to find the best pizzeria. I was told to check out Pizzeria da Franco and I was guaranteed it would be better than Neapolitan pizza (pizza from Napoli).
While I thought the pizza at this restaurant was a good pie, and one out of the four of us DID like it better than the pie she got in Napoli (freakin’ Gertie), the rest of us did not agree.
I don’t know if the pizzerias in Sorrento prepare their pizza dough differently, or just this one restaurant. But it is definitely different. Good, but not the best. Hate to break it to the Sorrento folks.
As an aside, and completely unrelated to the pizza, downtown Sorrento is way too commercialized and Americanized in my opinion. It’s my first time in Sorrento. I’ve been to many cities in Italy, including my stint in Florence and the other major cities (Rome and Napoli) and a plethora of other small towns, and Sorrento is by far the city you walk around and hear English spoken everywhere the most. I guess that is fine, but it just isn’t what I’m used to in traveling Italy. There was even an Irish pub and English pub on the main street.
Whatever. Just my two-cents.
