Pumphouse is a place I hear A LOT of people talk about. And I don’t mean just people in Wichita, Kansas. I know a lot of people in other places in Kansas as is evident by this blog (I spend a lot of time NOT in Wichita). And often times I have the following conversation with any ol’ John Smith (fake name).
John Smith: “Oh we were in Wichita last weekend to do ‘x’.”
TKG: “Oh yeah? What restaurants or bars did you check out?”
John Smith: “Blah blah blah and stopped by Pumphouse.”
TKG: “Why did you say blah blah blah.”
John Smith: “You don’t care.”
Anyway, Pumphouse has been around in its current form since around 2006. But really it’s been around a lot longer…since 1931 when it was just a…well pumphouse to pump your fuel into your Ford Model A (man I really miss driving that thing). And then for years and years it became a lubrication spot (I don’t know what lubrication is, but I can speculate ) at which point it included a diner.
I’d been told to grab a pizza by so many Gastrofans over the years and so I finally did. I ordered up a Cheese Pizza with half “The Meat.” “The Meat” came with Italian Sausage, Ground Beef, Pork Sausage, Canadian Bacon and Pepperoni. Super generous with the toppings in my opinion. It was a really great pizza.
Pumphouse is located in Old Town Wichita at 825 E. Second St.
