STORY OF HORATIO

After he boarded the ship and went to his cabin, he sat down and reflected. His heart was heavy and he could hardly go on. But he knew he had to. There was no other option. And he took comfort in writing music.

“When sorrow, like sea billows roll…”

Horatio had had so much pain the last two years. He lost his son to pneumonia in 1871 and then lost all of the property he had invested in (he was a lawyer) in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 – and was near financial ruin.

And now, his four daughters had drowned at sea with only his wife surviving.

His wife had sent the telegram “Saved alone…”

I remember hearing or reading the story at a young age.

It is something I have never forgotten – the story of why Horatio Spafford wrote “It is Well with My Soul.”

Stay Gastro.
