What’s up weirdos.
Somehow I have become the Old Fashioned Gastronomist. And I’m cool with that. Because I will be relentless about the places that serve just a bunch of syrup and sugar in the old fashioned. With nasty normal ice. Not smoked.
I’m not sure why any spot sells an Old Fashioned that isn’t smoked. Seriously. It’s like trying pizza that wasn’t baked in the oven. It’s so much better after you’ve thrown that thing in for a few minutes. Don’t have an oven? Don’t sell pizza. That’s my position.
And I thought the smoked Old Fashioned was definitely top tier at Georges French Bistro in Wichita. As far as Wichita spots, I still give the edge to Walker’s Jazz Lounge and The James & Rye. But this would probably be my third favorite Old Fashioned.
Just to be aware, the drink was $18. And then they did charge me 50 cents for the “smoke.” I don’t really care, but back to my original point — it shouldn’t be an option. Just smoke it.
