A trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma is incomplete without trying out Coney Island Hot Weiners. It’s been around for 100-years and was founded by a Greek dude that immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island named Christ Economou.
After 100-years, the restaurant is still owned by the family and the grandson of Christ Economou works there! That’s nuts. A restaurant older than Route 66 that is still in the family. I mean there are a handful of restaurants in Kansas still in business after 100-years, but I can’t think of any that are still in the original family. For example, Cozy Inn has been around for around 104-years, but it’s changed ownership several times over the years.
By the way, I read the reason Christ Economou used school desks for “seating” in his restaurant a century ago was because the seats were narrow, allowing for plenty of seating for the day laborers to quickly come in and sit and finish their meals. Very interesting and I love that they still have the same seating. But speaking of meals, I ordered three cheese coneys and also a bowl of the chili (that I took home and heated up later). It’s fascinating to me that the concept of “a coney” stems from Greeks experiencing hot dogs in New York and then them adding their own Greek-spiced ground beef to the hot dog.
Look, I’m not saying the food was amazing, but it was pretty good. Honestly. And I really liked the chili. But regardless, this place is just one of those spots you got to swing by to mark it off your Foodie Bucket List. It’s a freakin’ institution.
