What I appreciated about attending the 12th Annual Empty Bowls Wichita event is that it brings so many members of the community together to raise money for the food insecure. From the artists that make the bowls that you take home with you, to the restaurants/businesses that donate their time and chilis and soups and drinks (alcohol and non-alcohol), to those that get a ticket to the event, to the musicians that keep the vibes going. All to make sure there are less “Empty Bowls” in the community.

It was really great being a judge at this event with Fert The Foodie and Debra Fraser of KMUW (I told her I listen to her all the time and that she always wants my damn money).

After our blind tasting of 17 chilis and soups, we ended up awarding Best Chili to Wichita East High Culinary Club, Best Soup to Crested Crane Cafe, Best Vegan Soup to First Mile Kitchen and Most Creative Soup/Chili to Bricktown Brewery – Wichita. But there were so many excellent soups and chilis. Shoutout to the other participants — WCS Environmental Club, Local Flavor Restaurant, Chef Loudermilk, The Monarch, Scotch & Sirloin, Tanya’s Soup Kitchen, Twelve Restaurant & Bar, Andover Edventure, Public at the Brickyard and Wichita Marriott.

Also, a special shout out to all of the Empty Bowl volunteers and thank you to Brenda Lichman and Jana Erwin for being awesome hosts.
