It is rare that I go to a small town restaurant and I am unsure what to write about because it was absolute perfection. But my visit to Guy & Mae’s Tavern in Williamsburg, Kansas was just that. I truly loved everything from the food, to the service to the history, to the customers.
This restaurant was founded by Guy and Mae back in 1974 in this Kansas city with 390 residents. And has been run by that same family the whole time. Hell, my server, Caitlyn, is the great-granddaughter of Guy and Mae. How cool is that?
As for the food, I love that it is a simple menu and it appears the entirety of the food on that simple menu was top notch. I ordered the Rib Dinner. That meat seriously fell right off the bone. It was cooked perfectly. I also ordered a beef and polish sandwich. It was one of the best sandwiches I have had in some time. Gawd that polish meat was incredible. Incredible. Even the potato salad, which is done in the Amish style and the baked beans that I cannot even describe because the flavor was so unique. And the spicy pickles which are soaked in Jalapeno.
I could go on and on. But I’ll just say this — it would be a damn shame if you never check out this spot. I cannot say enough about my visit. Everything was just exactly what I wanted. I ate way more food than I needed. But it was because it was that damn good.
It’s moments like this that I am glad I have a food blog.
